Puja Kapur is a visual artist who lives and works in San Francisco and was born in New Delhi, India where she formally trained in Art and Architecture. Puja explores the physical and metaphysical realms of her spiritual journey through mixed-media compositions in a visual language to capture the ambiguous with real emotional experiences in an expressionist style.
Her work is influenced by her cross-cultural identity as a female immigrant, global diaspora, the symbolism of “home” and “spaces of encounter” as nodes in the urban fabric to deepen a sense of belonging in the contemporary nomadic world. She draws inspiration from India’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual philosophy and her study of its historical architecture. Through her work she seeks a deeper sensuality of slowness and inner listening to feel the relatedness to life’s rich tapestry of forms and the formless, our collective consciousness and shared human story. “I like my paintings to embody an energy of connection with my viewer wherein emotion and experience surpass intellectual analysis”
Her process is an interplay between technique and surrender, a state of meditation and intimate tango between control and letting-go to the unknown. Several layers evolve as a story unfolding through an adventure in an unknown space sparked by emotion. Compositions created with contradictory forces of layering and delayering create a visual aesthetic of interplay between movement and stillness towards a sense of synchronicity (inspired by Carl Jung) where colors and textures resonate to create transformative experiences.
Puja moved from India to New York in 2001 as a young architect in her 20’s where she lived for almost a decade before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2009. She graduated from the Sushant School of the Art and Architecture in India and New York’s Columbia University with a MSc. in Real Estate Development.
She works in an abstract expressionist style using mixed media and exhibits regularly, her work has been published in the juried journal, American Art Magazine and can be found in private and corporate collections in North America, Europe, Asia and India. Before moving to the US, Puja led an architectural design studio in India, and engaged in design and development of residential and commercial buildings for which she created several site-specific art installations. Puja is active in the bay area arts community and has held a leadership role with the Red Poppy Art House, an art organization in San Francisco.
