Inspired by Varanasi, India's spiritual capital on the banks of river Ganga, an embodiment of sacredness to the Hindus. To me, Varanasi is symbolic of The Realm of Beyond, of the singular universal consciousness.
Series A: Mixed-media triptych of altered and cut photographs layered with acrylic, oil and encaustic mediums. Inspired by Varanasi during the day: sacred religious yagnas including "asthi visarjan" (pyre ash offering) ritualistic bathing and prayer ceremonies occur alongside everyday activities of life.
Series B: Mixed-media triptych of altered and cut photographs layered with acrylic, oil and encaustic mediums. Inspired by Varanasi during the night: The Ganga Aarti, a daily choreographed ceremony at dusk where Hindu priests make a fire-filled offering to Lord Shiva and River Ganga under illuminated "chatris" (umbrellas) and spin brass lamps and sing "bhajans" (religious songs) while pilgrims seek blessings from boats in the river and the "ghats" (historic steps descending from the banks into the river).
Series C: Mixed-media textured abstract compositions using acrylic, oil and cold wax inspired by Varanasi during the day and night.
